I didn't do any research because this machine was recommended by my Italian gelato maker friend (moved here from Rome 4 years ago). I use all authentic gelato recipes, so I can't speak for American "gelato", but my gelato turns out so creamy and delicious in 12-20 minutes tops. I mature my base in fridge 24hrs. I have made regular ice cream with same results. These results are spinning DIRECTLY IN TUB, NOT REMOVABLE BOWL. With the removable bowl and following directions using alcohol between tub and bowl, you're talking 35-40 mins and not the same consistency. I make my gelato about 5 liters at a time, starting with most mild flavor and letting machine rest a few mins in between. I spin 1 quart at a time which is the perfect volume. Cleaning is easy- use rubber scraper to get out most of gelato, then clean with hot soapy water to sanitize and I use a siphon to remove water and repeat then rinse. It's easy with a siphon. For home use, this machine is great. I'm a pastry chef and have used high end machines but who has the space for that at home? This one is the perfect size, not terribly loud and makes a distinct sound (same sound the high end machines make when gelato is nearing ideal consistency) when it's almost ready. Machine stops automatically and holds for you until you're able to empty it out. HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS MACHINE!!!!! I can't say enough great things about this machine. Your gelato/ice cream recipe will only be as good as your machine. Texture will elevate to new levels with this machine. LOVE LOVE LOVE IT!!!
